The USN was operating NASTY boats (imported wooden boats from Norway) along the North Vietnamese coast & DESOTO patrols (intelligence gathering) via US destroyers (also along the North Vietnamese coast). The North Vietnamese got wind of it and dispatched some of their naval units (135th TB Squadron) to tackle a US warship when and if they should ever be in the area. On 02 August 1964 the destroyer USS Maddox happened to be within striking distance and the 135th TB Squadron engaged the Maddox. That was the beginning of the Tonkin Gulf Incident.
