Does Chinese kale contain goitrogens and oxalate like normal kale does?

From what I have found on the Internet, Chinese kale seems to contain goitrogens. See pp. 148 and 149 of this scientific journal article by a group of Chinese researchers: http://www.academicjournals.org/AJB/PDF/pdf2008/18Jan/You%20et%20al.pdf. This article seems to indicate that in general the benefits of Chinese kale are greater than the disadvantages. But read the article carefully to distinguish between the seeds and the leaves of the plant - the chemical concentrations are very different. beamup2

Is soya milk good for the health?

On my Facebook page, T H E E C O C H E F, I wrote about soy, and posted a video link from Dr. Mercola. It is important to read and follow all you can with regard to soy, so that you are aware of the actual health risks of consuming soy, even organic, and even lacto-fermented. Soy presents three areas of concern: 1) Trypsin (protein digestion inhibitor) 2) Phytic Acid(nutrient inhibitor), and 3) Goitrogens (impairs thyroid function). Fermentation definitely breaks down trypsin and phytic acid, to make the soy more bio-available, but it is not clear as to whether it also breaks down the goitrogens, and there is even some evidence to suggest that it makes the goitrogens more bio-available. So, if you have any issues with your thyroid, you should avoid every kind of soy (soy milk, tofu, soy sauce, tamari), even fermented soy (tempeh, miso, and natto).

What supplement is good for sluggish thryoid?

Iodine. Greatly enhances (is necessary) for thyroid function. Found abundantly in seaweeds, Himalayan salts, or also can be supplemented with nascent iodine or seaweed supplements (13mg/day recommended by some)... For thyroids it also helps to avoid goitrogens, foods which inhibit iodine integration, such as peanuts, soybeans, etc... Best wishes and happy health!

Can rabbits eat choi sum?

Pak choi and other chinese cabbages, like most all cruciferous vegetables, are safe for most rabbits to eat in moderation. These veggies are high in goitrogens, which can be dangerous in large amounts, and they're also indicated in gas, which can lead to serious illness -- for these reasons, crucifers should be limited in your rabbit's diet. If your rabbit is particularly sensitive to gas, you should eliminate these foods from your rabbit's diet entirely.

Is spinach good for thyroid patients?

A study conducted by Oregon State University focused on cruciferous vegetables found that, "Very high intakes of cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage and turnips, have been found to cause hypothyroidism in animals."Kale is a cruciferous vegetable. It contains goitrogens which are a substance that can slow down the function of the thyroid gland. It does this by interfering with how the thyroid absorbs iodine which can cause hypothyroidism, or an enlargement of the thyroid; also known as a goiter.Like any vegetable it is important to thoroughly wash it before eating it raw, boiling, steaming or even cooking it like sauteing. If you have a thyroid condition and you decide to eat kale in moderation, it is best to cook it because cooking it will inactivate the goitrogens. If you have further questions about the foods you eat, as it relates to your thyroid condition, consult a healthcare professional such as a dietitian or a nutritionist.

Is it okay to take soy isoflavones with soy milk?

This is a big problem. Soy contains plant estrogens in the form of isoflavones which effectively raises your estrogen levels and therefore lowers your testosterone levels. Those hormones are in competition so more of one means less of the other. Messing up your estrogen levels has devastating effects for men, women as well as children and newborns. Soy is only fit for human consumption in it's fermented forms ( soy sauce, miso, tofu ), other than that soy contains phytates, which block absorption of nutrients from your stomach to your bloodstream; phytoestrogens which wreak havoc on your biology, causing sterility in women and sexual impotency and severely lowered sperm count in men; soy lecithin which causes inflammation and raises your risk of death from all diseases; goitrogens, which cause thyroid problems or failure; Toxins called protease inhibitors, which prevent proper digestion of anything in your gut and lead to a host of gut disease.

What foods are recommended for someone who has a goiter?
