It depends on the size and type of house or building. In Mexico there are small adobe houses and palm shacks that almost anybody could build; there are brick and filler block houses made by small groups of people; larger houses and small buildings require medium to large groups of workers and more sophisticated machines such as concrete mixers, cranes and excavators. Larger buildings and skyscrapers require large amounts of workers and complex construction machinery such as pipelayers, lifts and boring machines.

In sum, houses in Mexico are built much the same way American houses are; The exception being in Mexico there are almost no houses made of wood, as timber has a greater price of 35-40% due to the rough topography of Mexico.

Houses made of adobe are no longer built since about 100 years. Single family dwellings and condos of up to 5 floors are mostly made of bricks, with internal structures made of corrugated steel rods, called "varillas". High-rise condos are mostly made of steel, like those found in New York.

The reason for this is that timber is more expensive in Mexico due to geographic difficulties; such country has quite extensive forests but most of them are located on hilly terrain which increases the production and transportation costs.

Mexico is a land of great contrasts - they have regions with a quality of live comparable to Norway, as opposed to regions with income, education and life expectancy equivalent to that of Haiti or Madagascar. As such, Mexican housing widely varies upon two things - climate and cost:

  • The really poor usually live on small cardboard shacks, in irregular settlements known as ciudades perdidas (lost cities).
  • For low to middle class housing, you could find humble palm shacks along the coast, adobe houses on desert climates or wood cabins in more temperate climates; large prefab housing projects and single-family dwellings made of filler block are also common in major cities.
  • Medium income families would afford brick houses with a small backyard and sometimes, a front garage or lawn; in towns and cities, apartment buildings and condominiums are common, but most buildings have 5 stories or less.
  • Upper-class people in Mexico usually buy pretty large departments and lofts (up to 2,000 sq ft) in tall apartment buildings (up to 15 stories high), or large houses in the suburbs with garage space for 2-3 vehicles and a backyard with optional pool.
  • The Mexican wealthy and super-rich usually have huge McMansions or departments in large residential projects and horizontal condos with spa and Golf club. These are of course, within enclosed communities.
