The earlies records of the use of a kite are those of the Chinese. They go back some 2800 years. A link to the Wikipeida article on this wonderfully simple and roundly entertaining tethered air vehicle is supplied.

Answer:

They were made out of cloth bamboo string or rope and paste Answer:

It is unknown as kite flying has been around so long but the first written record of a kite is in 300BC but this kite was quite advanced and being used to lift a man! This early Chinese kite was made from wood and cloth. Some have speculated that the earliest kites were made from large leaves (theca or banana) in Indonesia and used for holding fishing line a long way out to sea. Two leaves are threaded together with bamboo. In Taiwan breadfruit leaves were used. In both China and Taiwan strips of bamboo were plaited to make matting that would hold out fishing lines. Flying lines can be made from climbing vines.
