Unfortunately historians make a confusing use of the tem Roman Empire. They use it in two senses. One is the common one of territorial possessions. The other refers to the period of rule by emperors which followed the Roman Republic.

In the territorial sense, Rome already had an empire during the Republic. Much of her imperial expansion occurred during the republican period.

The Roman Republic and rule by emperors can hardly be compared. The Republic was headed by two annually elected consuls. The other officers of state were also elected annually, except for the censor, whose term of office was 18 months. The emperors were absolute rulers who exercised personal power; that is, they were despots. They appointed the officers of state and the imperial bureaucracy. The senate was turned into an instrument for the emperor's power.

What European countries colonized haiti?

The current Republic of Haiti is in the western part of the island called La Española. La Española was first colonized by the spaniards, but they were installed mainly in the eastern part of the island (the current Dominican Republic). Taking advantage of this fact, some french buccaneers settled the western coast triggering the french reclamations over this part of La Española. In 1697, in the treaty of Ryswick that settled the Nine Year's war or Great Alliance War between France and a coalition of other europeans powers formed by Spain, England, the Holly Roman Empire and the United Provinces, the Kingdom of Spain ceded the west part of La Española to the French Kingdom. It would be a part of the Fench colonial empire until his independence in 1804.

If not for Julius Caesar would the Roman Republic have given way to the Roman Empire?

Okay, your question needs a twofold answer. First of all the Roman republic and the Roman empire were different entities. The Republic was/is a form of government; an empire is a large holding of some sort. The two are not identical. And no, Julius Caesar did not bring down the Roman republic. The republic had been dying or even considered dead since at least the time of the first triumvirate. Caesar merely was fortunate enough to take advantage of the opportunities that opened up for him.

Was Spartacus a roman emperor?

No, Spartacus was not a Roman Emperor. Spartacus was a Thracian, possibly a soldier who was either captured by a Roman Legion or served as an Auxilliary in a Roman Legion, was enslaved either for failure to served appropriatedly as an Auxilliary or because he had been captured, and trained as a Gladiator. He initiated a slave rebellion within the Roman Republic known as the Third Servile War, in an apparent attempt to escape Roman territory. There were no Roman Emperors at the time, since it was the Roman Republic and not the Roman Empire whom he rebelled against. Spartacus rebellion occur in the late phases of the Roman Republic, & just prior to the Roman Empire. There would not be a de facto Roman Emperor until Julius Ceasar who was technically Dictator for Life, a position contrary to the constitutional framework of the Roman Republic. Julius was the last executive of the Roman Republic. There would not be a de jure Roman Emperor until Octavius Ceasar, better not as Augustus Ceasar, terminated the Roman Republic and initiated the Roman Empire. Augustus was the first executive of the Roman Empire. Augustus established the Principate phase of the Roman Empire which had some vestiges of the Roman Republic; this was not the case in the Dominate phase of the Roman Empire.

Who established an empire in place of the old roman republic?

First of all, Rome had been an empire since the second Punic war, probably sooner. There is no exact date. Also you cannot compare a republic with an empire as they are two different things. A republic is a form of government and an empire is a large holding of some type. In other words, the Roman empire was ruled by the republican form of government until the fall of the republic and the establishment of the principate, which was engineered by Octavian/Augustus.

What is the differences between the Roman republic and the Roman empire?

This is a confusing question. First please remember that Rome was already an empire under the republic. What is erroneously called the "Roman empire" is the Principate. The government of the republic was by popular election while the government of the principate was by appointment. Both forms of government used the senate as a consulting body.

How long ago was ancient rome formed?

There were three governments in Ancient Rome: there was the Roman monarchy, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. The Roman Monarchy (753 BC--509 BC) was your average monarchy. The Roman Republic (509 BC--27 BC) was a Representative form of government. The Roman Empire (27 BC-AD 476) formed when the Roman Republic was removed (some accounts claim by Julius Caesar).
