The slash and burn technique releases CO2 into the atmosphere. The trees that used to fix this CO2, hold the soil in place and provide water vapor through transpiration are gone. The the lack of water vapor decreases precipitation, the lack of precipitation dessicates the soil, the dry soil without any roots anchoring them is more susceptible to erosion, the increased greenhouse gas of CO2 traps more of the suns heat, leading to even dryer soil, the fertile topsoil blows away. In a few years that lush rainforest will become a barren desert.

· Slash-and-burn is an agricultural technique which involves cutting and burning of forests or woodlands to create fields

· The ash from the burned vegetation adds another layer of nutrients to the soil, and that with the time resting allows the soil to regenerate.

· Slash and burn tends to be an ecological disaster. The clearing and waste of the trees and other growth is wasteful and, in the long run, very harmful.

· Bare land is subject to water and wind erosion. Bare land can no longer retain waters of heavy rains a flooding can occur.

· The burn kills much of the wildlife of the area and robs, what is not killed, of its shelter.

· Today the term is mainly associated with the dramatic loss of tropical rain forests, but the 'slash and burn' technique is still used by between 200 and 500 million people worldwide
