What are some good ways of putting out a fire?

There are several ways to put out a fire, but it really depends on what kind of fire you're talking about:

1. Adding water
2. Removing oxygen by covering it with something non-flammable, such as dirt or metal lids.
3. Using a fire extinguisher or other chemicals
4. Calling the fire department
5. Removing the fuel source, such as wood
6. Stomping on it if it's a small fire
7. Blowing on it, if it's a match or a candle flame (anything larger will grow by blowing on it)
8. Isolating it so that it dies out after its fuel is consumed

for the most part fire departments will use water. But a more modern way of putting out structure fires is to use foam. Fire departments prefer to use foam because it lessens the surface tension of water allowing it to penetrate deeper into material therefor extinguishing the fire faster. In addition to foam departments use CAFS which is compressed air foam system which can make the tank of water last much longer and also make hose lines much lighter.

Putting out a fire depends upon what kind of fire and how big it is.

However, in general, removing any part of the "fire triangle" will put out any fire.

In other words, remove the Fuel, Heat or Oxygen, and the fire goes out. You can do this in any number of ways, depending upon what kind of fire it is.

For example, large wildfire is usually put out by removing the fuel, either by letting it burn out or by forming a separation from unburned fuel.
