There is over 840 years of Irish history that influence the current situation in Northern Ireland, so this is a question that would be very difficult to answer comprehensively. The coming of the Normans in 1169 was the starting point. A huge amount of events have happened since then. The plantation of Ulster and the battle of the Boyne are two of the man such factors that set the foundations of some of the problems. In terms of English history, many kings and queens have had an influence, and the changing from one to another has also often had an impact. The setting up of the Church of England by Henry VIII would be very important, as Protestantism soon came to Ireland.

What was the relationship between Ireland and Britain?

Ireland has a very long history with Britain, which goes back as far as 1169. From then there have been plantations in Ireland, most notably in the north of Ireland/ There were many revolutions and rebellions. The history between Ireland and Britain is long and complex, too much to go through in an answer like this. So to take a simpler look at what led to the current situation, all of Ireland was under British rule, being part of the United Kingdom between 1801 and 1922. Then, what is now the Republic of Ireland became independent and what is now Northern Ireland stayed as part of the United Kingdom. That is the situation to this day.

What is the source of conflict between Ireland and Northern Ireland?

There is no conflict between the north and the republic. Basically Ireland was under british rule and events in the years after the 1916 rising led to The British 'giving back' Ireland, ie creating a republic. Although, 6 counties in Ulster (out of 9) were kept under british rule, and are now Northern Ireland. Within northern Ireland there are nationalists, those who want the north to join the republic, and unionists, those who want to remain under british rule. Therefore the conflict is generally confined within the north..
