What is the most popular ethnic food in England?

Different Tastes

• Based on my own personal, limited survey, I say Indian... hands down!

• I think it's Chinese food; you can probably find a Chinese take-out or restaurant in every place in England.

• A recent survey declared that curry had overtaken fish 'n' chips in the popularity stakes.

From my knowledge base ethnic wise it is with no doubt Indian Food mainly curry and Madras curry at that, yellow and very mild also known as massamam curry which has a Muslim influence.This goes back to the British Empire in it's hayday. Calcutta and Bombay and Madras were the main setlements as far back as 1700 B.C. at that time their were other settlements in India from other countries. Most notibly Pondicherry (French),Cochin (Dutch), Goa (Portuguese). In 1860 with the fall of the Moghul empire the British with the most powerful army took over basically the whole country except for a small area around Deli and the Mysore region at the southern tip of India. India actually became India the nation only in 1947 when the British relinquished their rule. Almost 300 years in India and the travels of individuals back and forth has made Indian Curry the ethnic mainstay in British cuisine.

In truth, England has a cosmopolitan cuisine. However, there are some traditional dishes that have stood the test of time and stand alongside modern trends with ease: Bangers and MASH.
