From time to time, early versions of New Testament books or just early fragments are found, taking us back in time, and demonstrating differences in the later manuscripts relied on by the Christian translators. In another case, a tiny fragment of what was at one stage thought to have been from Mark's Gospel was found at Qumran among the Dead Sea Scrolls, which shows how important it is to ensure that early fragments are what they really seem to be.
Sometimes we have two or more early versions, and scholars have to determine which version is likely to have been closer to the original. In a few cases, scholars are satisfied that one version, which may differ significantly from modern Bibles, was certainly original. An example of this is in Mark's Gospel, which scholars now agree originally ended at verse 16:8, with the young man telling the women that Jesus was risen and they fled in terror, telling no one - both the 'Long Ending' now in use (16:9-20) and the alternative 'Short Ending' date from much later.
