Many years ago, religious observance was mandatory in the armed forces, and I recollect church parades on Sunday (tough if that was not your holy day). Having been christened in the Presbyterian faith, I was in the latter. We were taken to a Methodist service, and we constituted seven Methodists, two hundred odd Presbyterians ( our unit was 50% Scotsmen), four atheists, eight Jews, two Muslims and one Buddhist. We were a very compliant people.
