The same it is used in the United States, Canada and/or Europe. Mexico is an emerging market, with great income disparities among its population, but it doesn't mean it does not have hi-tech. For instance, there are some technologies common to most Mexicans:

  • Electricity (NEMA 1-15 and 5-15 sockets), some of it generated with geothermal, wind and even nuclear power plants -- the question image above shows the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant.
  • CDMA/GSM (cellular phone technology).
  • Computers (many people have laptops, desktops and tablets).
  • Gadgets (iPhone, LG, Samsung and many Android smart phones are pretty common)
  • Automobiles (many cars driven in the US, Canada and Japan are made in Mexico. Remember the Pontiac Aztek? It was designed by Mexican engineers).
  • Airplanes (many aircraft parts are assembled in Mexico too).
  • LCD TV, 3D TV, HD TV: most of these are novel technologies often paid by the richer segments of the population, but they are available, nonetheless.

There are even very-high technologies available in Mexico, such as Nanotechnology and biotechnology. These are, however, developed on a very small scale and are not common or large enough to compete against larger American or European corporations. That is among other things, why Mexico is still considered a developing country, instead of an industrialized one. For example, they have a couple of nuclear research laboratories, but these are small and mostly used for civilian applications.

You mean what hi-tech products are made in Mexico? From cellular phones to plasma TVs; from automobiles to ships to airplane parts and electronics, many of our everyday stuff is made in Mexico.

Among the many types of industry and the products they manufacture, Mexico includes the following, with some representative companies:

  • Food and Beverages - Sigma Alimentos, Gamesa, Grupo Bimbo.
  • Aerospace - Tecnologia Aeroespacial Mexicana (TAM), Hydra Technologies.
  • Electronics - Lanix, Mabe Mexico.
  • Tobacco - Delicados.
  • Chemicals - Alpek, Cydsa, Mexichem, Vitro.
  • Iron and Steel - Altos Hornos de Mexico, Grupo Acerero del Norte.
  • Petroleum - Pemex.
  • Biotechnology - Biotecnologia Ambiental, Laboratorios Silanes.
  • Mining - Grupo Mexico, Hylsamex.
  • Shipbuilding - Bender Shipbuilding, Servicios Navales e Industriales.
  • Electricity - Comision Federal de Electricidad.
  • Defense Products - Industrias Militares Mexicanas (Mexican Defense Secretariat).
  • Textiles - PYOSA, Scappino, Andrea.
  • Clothing - Flexi, Milano, Vicky Form.
  • Motor vehicles and parts - Electro Optica, Grupo Bocar, Industrias Automotrices LODI.
  • Computers - HP Mexico, IBM Mexico.
  • Consumer Durables - Industrias Marino, Grupo Mabe.

Note: some of these industries are subsidiaries of foreign companies (for example, Hewlett-Packard Mexico) but these assemble or manufacture products for such brands in Mexican soil. These are commonly known as maquiladoras.
