they are called witness marks. Line them up together when assembling the pump
There is a cover on the pump that will reveal the pump marks. The engine marks are on the rear housing and flywheel.
If you have the 22r engine, it is at the top of the front passenger side of the engine near the timing cover. If you have a 22RE then the pump is in the tank.
align the crankshaft pulley mark with mark on oil pump housing, and align marks on cam gears with marks on rear cover, then install timing belt.
The crank mark is inline with the key facing straight up timing marks on diesel pump and oil pump you take the thin metal covers off both gears only the covers not the gears there are x1 hole in each gear that you screw a bolt with a 12mm head on it to lock them in place.
Inside the gas tank

where are the timing marks on diesel pump on a 4630 John Deere tractor
when replacing the oil pump on a 98 ford winstar 3.0 liter engine do I have to pack the gears on the new oil pump
Assuming you know how to remove everything to get to the oil pump. Insert o ring insert the splined round tube over the crank shaft install d ring gasket insert gears ( dont matter how you line them up) install oil pump to timing cover torque down
looking down from (ONTOP) of the engine they are behind the water pump
it is quite involved it is behind the engine front crank pulley you need to remove the oil pan and the pulley not to mention the radiator to give you some space to work
oil supply to and return from the engine; Oil is normally gravity fed to pump then pumped to engine topend and crankshaft etc then is returned to the sump or oil bag(tank) via the return gears of the pump
