There has been some question as to why some Bibles have only 66 books: Martin Luther, in the sixteenth century removed seven books from the Old Testament because he didn't agree with what they said. When asked his authority for this, he replied that the Jews only had the lesser number in their canon. This is a partial truth, as the Jews of Our Blessed Lord's day obviously had 73, this is the Bible that Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, used and quoted from, the Jews didn't have the lesser amount until a century later, and they removed the books which had specifically Christian doctrines in them. Why Martin Luther would follow those who rejected Jesus as the Christ, and not follow the Church he founded is a matter of some interest.

120. It was by the apostolic Tradition that the church discerned which writings are to be included in the list of the sacred books. (Cf. Dei Verbum 8§ 3) This complete list is called the canon of Scripture. It includes 46 books for the Old Testament (45 if we count Jeremiah and Lamentations as one) and 27 for the New. (Cf.
