Due to the indutrial age, Monopolies are created in many industries (especially oil) and so the Sherman Antitrust Act (1890) was created. This forbade any combinations that place a restraint on trade. This act was not however used to break up monopolies but instead, it is used to restrict the creation of labor unions.

The Industrial Age also caused effects on the South. Agriculture-based economy was relatively unaffected by industrialization but one industry that did flourish in the South was tobacco monopoly. The American Tobacco Company was controlled by James Buchanan Duke

Industrial Age also impacted women. it porvided new job opportunities (such as switchboard operators, typists, some factory jobs,etc. ). they were given freedom yet they had smaller families and they had to wait longer to get married. Examples of this imdependent women are the "Gibson Girls"

Industrial Age also effected worker. There is a shift in jobs from farming to factory work. By 1900 2 out of 3 Americans were "wage-earners" [paid by the hour]Working life was controlled by the whistle and Workers faced tough conditions in the workplace. they had 12-16 hour workdays and wages were low. Working condition were also dangerous. Workers also lacked the power to bring about changes which broguht about labor unions.

-wanted shorter hours and higher wages

Dealt primarily with skilled labor
