The ownners manual does detail the process...do you have it?
In the instructions it should say how to program it to your own garage door. Much like a universal remote control for your television.
I am not sure what brand your garage door opener is, but perhaps you should check with the company that made your particular garage door opener to make sure to get one that will work. If that is not an option for you, I did find that Walmart offers a universal garage door opener remote. Here is a link to the product: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Chamberlain-Clicker-Universal-Garage-Door-Opener-Remote-Control/10226394
That all depends on how your opener programs - if its smart button learning or dip switch. http://www.clickerdepot.com/help-faq .. there is a good explanation there. You should also look at the instructions that came with the remote.
Yes, you can get a replacement from the company, or a universal opener from places like Home Depot.

The garage door opener can be programmed into any car. The control works like a TV remote that is universal. The opener just needs to be mounted to the interior of the car.

There are two web sites that offer step by step directions, Overheaddoor and doityourself. These are not brand specific instructions. Hometime, as show featured on PBS, has a web site with advice on how to install a garage door opener.
Yes most home stores sell the universal garage door openers that can be programmed, or go to the website of the garage door brand.
Universal garage door openers work because they have a row of switches that must be in the correct sequence to open a specific garage door. To open a door with an unknown sequence the person using the opener would have to manually try sequences until they found the correct one. This would take a fairly long time.
You can find garage door openers at relatively inexpensive prices from a lot of retailers. However, I sourced a low cost garage door opener (priced at $39.99) from Walmart that operates with a four digit pin number which should prevent the door accidentally dropping down. It is the 'Chamberlain Clicker Universal Wireless Keypad Garage Door Opener'.
