Because of budgets, the aging orbiters, and unfortunately.. Politics.
Six were made, but only five ever went into space.
5 Space Shuttle orbiters have been built. 3 remain in service.
It orbits a planet or other body. Satellites are orbiters. Usually the orbiter collects data about the body it is orbiting. This can involve photography, spectroscopy, etc.

Because orbiters must slow down enough to enter orbit around a planet. This requires either very slow initial speeds with long transit times, or a large amount of fuel to slow down upon reaching the planet.

The space shuttle Discovery has flown the most times of all the space shuttle orbiters.
