Maybe if it's not working the breaker has flipped. This can be due to a whole new range of electrical issues. Also, it may be not working because it shut off due to being full of condensation water. Some will shut off when they sense they are full, some will fill until the compressor mechanically cant produce compressed air (as water (theoretically)cannot be compressed ), and some will fill until the flood the motor.
Maybe the sidewall of the compressor has rusted through creating a hole, or maybe its missing a fitting. In either case the compressor can't create a store of compressed air causing it to run constantly. Since these compressor are mostly designed for intermittent use only, it will eventually wear or burn itself out.
If the compressor itself has failed it will be due to issues in one of two categories; mechanical and electrical. If this is a refrigeration compressor, then the issue is most likely mechanical. If this is a smaller, more common sized reciprocating compressor such as one's often used to inflate car tires, then most likely the issue is electrical. It could still be a mechanical issue due to internals wearing out.
Possible electrical problems with this type of compressor:
-Loose electrical connections:
-if connections are loose the voltage drops. when the voltage drops the motor draws more current through the wire the maintain motor speed causing overheating. the most cost effective fix is total replacement.
-Breaker overloaded:
- if the breaker which the compressor draws power from is overloaded, when everything is running, the compresser cant get enough power. just like above, the motor will work too hard and overheat.

its a hand held rachet that's hooked to an air compressor by a hose and it operates on compressed air from the air compressor.
An air compressor which is used to compress air in a cylinder, that is reducing the volume and increasing the pressure of air is known as positive displacement air compressor. It is used for the compression process in IC engines.
What kind of air compressor is it? And if it is oil lubricated no!
An item designed for the purpose of unloading an air compressor at the end of a pumping operation or at any time when voltage failure occurs.
As the piston moves up and down, it pushes air at increasing pressure into a cylinder.
It is possible the air compressor is bad. You will need to replace the air compressor, so the air will work again.
An air compressor sucks in and compresses air from the atmosphere. Whatever contaminants present in the air at the air intake of the compressor will be present in the air which is discharged from the compressor, with the possible exception of particulates which are filtered by the intake air filter. It is possible that carbon monoxide and other engine exhaust emissions, or ambient gases, or polutants can be in the atmosphere near the compressor intake. These invisible gases mix with the "air" and are compressed and discharged from the compressor. This is one reason why it is not safe to breath the air from a compressor unless the compressor is labeled that it is rated and approved as a breathing air source. Even then, the compressor must be in proper working condition and be operated by a qualified person. Breathing air from a compressor that is not rated and approved for breating air applications CAN KILL YOU.
The conclusion of and air compressor is a supply of air. The air compressor generates air that is stored in a tank.
Unless an air-dryer is installed, condensation will occur in air line. Drain condensation out of compressor daily.

It is absolutely worth replacing the compressor. Sometimes a compressor will have faults straight from the factory, but once replaced, your A/C should serve you well for the next 10-12 years. A faulty compressor does not mean the unit should be trashed too.
enthalpy of air leaving the compressor minus enthalpy of air entering the compressor
One of my air compressor broke and where can I find a great place to buy a new air compressor?
