Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints faced serious persecution while in the eastern United States. Some were tarred and feathered, for instance. Even the government opposed the Church, as in Missouri the Mormon Extermination Order was issued, mandating that all members of the Church be driven from the state. Persecution arguably culminated with the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum. This religious persecution made settling in a new area desirable such that the Saints would be able to practice their religion without interference or harm, so they went West under the direction of President Brigham Young, Joseph Smith's successor. There weren't many variables "pulling" the Church to Utah specifically, however; in fact, due to an apparently bad climate and landscape for farming, many were unhappy about settling there. However, because Young said that the area was where God wanted the Church to settle, most agreed and were able to prosper.
