the non officer ranks in the Canadian coast guard go from a 1 to a 7 in three departments logistics (std) engineroom (eng) and deck (ded) a one is an entry level position a 2 is an experienced hand a 3 is a lead hand a 4 and5 is a intermediate position specialist tech, carpentor, crane&winch operator and a 5 or a 6 is a supervisor I have never seen a level 7 so i don't know what position it is.
For the Army and the Air forces, the ranks are very similar. The ones for the Navy are pretty different.
Non commissioned ranks:
The first rank that you get appointed as soon as you join is
Private (Pvt) No badge
Then you get one inverted Chevron
Private (Pvt) One Chevron
Corporal (Cpl) Two Chevrons
Master Corporal (MCpl) Two chevrons with a maple leaf above them
Sergeant (Sgt) Three chevrons and a maple leaf
Warrant Officer (WO) St. Edward's crown
Master Warrant Officer (MWO) St. Edward's crown with a wreath surrounding it
Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) The Canadian coat of arms
Once you get to Master Warrant, anyone ranked below you addresses you as 'sir' or 'ma'am'.
Officer ranks:
Officer Cadet (Ocdt) One small (or half sized) stripe
Second Lieutenant (Pronounced left-tenant, not loo-tenant in Canada) (2Lt) One regular stripe
Lieutenant (Lt) One small stripe over one regular stripe
Captain (Cpt) Two regular stripes
Major (Maj) One small strip between two regular stripes
Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) 3 regular stripes
Colonel (Col) 4 regular stripes
When I speak of half or smaller stripes compared to regular sized stripes, I am referring to thickness. Stripes are black.
General Ranks:
Brigadier General (B. Gen) One maple leaf, with a crossed sabre and baton above, both below St. Edward's crown
Major General (Maj. Gen) Same as B. Gen with 2 maple leaves side by side
Lieutenant General (Lt. Gen) 3 maple leaves, 1 centered above, two side by side below
General (Gen) 4 maple leaves in a diamond shape-1 centered above, two side by side in the middle, 1 centered below
Yes, I know it doesn't make sense that a Lieutenant General is higher than a Major general, but that's how it works.
There is only one General in Canada.
Now for the Navy ranks. The badges of the Navy, air and army are all the same, but the ranks just have different names
Non commissioned ranks:
Ordinary Seaman (OS) No badge
Able Seaman (AB) One chevron
Leading Seaman (LS) 2 chevrons
Master Seaman (MS) 2 chevrons and a maple leaf
