One of the big things was actually if I could trust the dealerships. So not really knowing exactly what car I wanted to get looking at reviews of the dealerships was a big thing for me.

Taking a look at those to see if the dealership has been showing good experiences and even tackles some bad ones can help deiced if they are trust worthy.
Then depending on what car you are interested in buying you will want to look up the most common issues for the year and make. Absolutely try to check its service records to see how it has been taking care of.
