Geography. Portugal is the westernmost country in mainland Europe and Lisbon is the westernmost European capital or major city (including the British Isles). Also there were important historical factors: Portugal's land boundaries have been stable longer than any other country on Earth (essentially unchanged for almost 800 years), as such, it was not as preoccupied with securing its land borders as other nation-states even from the 13th century. Prince Henry the Navigator established a school of navigation and exploration, continuing and enhancing the support of this endeavour with the wealth and prestige of the royalty. There was a desire to break the control of Arab merchants (allied with Venice) over the very lucrative spice trade with South and East Asia; in order to do so, this meant sailing around Africa, by-passing the Eastern Mediterranean region, and Portugal was in the best position to accomplish this, which it did.

Portugal and Spain
Portugal is the westernmost country in Europe where it is fairly isolated. In one side Portugal has Spain, its rival and with whom had numerous wars and in the other side they had the Atlantic Ocean. So Portugal became a country facing the ocean rather than facing the European land. Having such a huge coastline, its normal that there is a very important connection between the country and the ocean. Thus Portugal is very much well known for its seafare tradition and of course the "Discovery Period". In a gist we can say that the geographical location and the political situation of that era gave Portugal the advantage in becoming one of the most important nation in Europe in that time.
