Opinion:

As the 'Age of Enlightenment' was permeating Europe, these thoughts were making their way across the 'pond' (Atlantic Ocean) to like-minded individuals. Some would begin the 'progressive' movement of Politics (Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson to name two Presidents), while the 'Scopes' trial in the States would open the door to evolutionist.

In the late 19th to early 20th Century here, 'Humanist' began to sprout. These believed man had the ability (not necessarily innate as earlier Philosophers Locks and Hobbs posited 'born good vs born bad') to be ethical and/or moral without the influence of religion. Conservative religious folk began a movement to counter these Protestants who denied doctine they held to be fundamental to their faith - hence the term 'fundamentalist.'

Today, these fundamental core values can be seen amongst 'Evangelicals.'
