Depending on the color and smell of the smoke, it could be a few things:

To get this fixed, you are looking at a complete engine rebuild (around $1000). This is the most likely failure if you are experiencing hard starting, smoking on startup, and occasional smoking while driving. They may be able to diagnose this at a shop by doing a pressure test on the coolant system.
This, as the smell would lead you to believe, could indicate an oil leak into your combustion chamber. This also would need to be fixed with a full rebuild. This is less common, but not unheard of.
This would indicate that you may have a leaky fuel injector. if this is the case, you may be able to solve your problem temporarily by using a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, but eventually you will need to have your injectors cleaned or replaced.

white smoke does not always mean oil. Where is the smoke coming from. Sometimes small pin holes in the water system can cause a white smoke or steam which appears to be smoke. If the engine is at idle that would be the only time you could see that type of hole until it gets bigger. Check for any loss of water/antifreeze in the vehicle.

You may have blow a seal. This would cause oil to enter the combustion cylinder and cause blue smoke. Or the over fill could have cause oil to get in there and it will not smoke until it reaches the flash point (the point in wich it berns).
