Usually a thrown rod is caused from a worn rod bearing that allows the rod to start knocking and ultimately it ends up being beaten apart by the normal operation. Rod and main bearings typically wear because of poor engine maintenance. Oil and filters must be changed regularly and according to the approved schedule. Only high quality oil should be used, that would be oils that contain the SAE certifications on the label. Typically, any of the major motor oils, but most shops will generally recommend the Pennsylvania oils or synthetics.
Put a new master cylinder on. Throw the old one away.
The slave cylinder is on the input shaft of the transmission at the throw out bearing. The transmission will have to be removed to change it.

The 1997 Cavalier has two motor mounts, as well as a transmission mount. If the mounts are broken the motor can move around and cause damage to components under the hood.
The k24t motor has a chain. That is the 2.4 litre, 4 cylinder motor. From what I remember - The V6 is also a chain.
