Something is wrong in the steering column. Take it to an auto trim shop. It's probably your ignition key cylinder that's bad. This happened to my '89 last summer... it stuck in the "On" or "Run" position one day, and it's still there! The proper way to fix this is to replace the cyliner, or any other parts in the steering column that may also cause, or contribute, to your problem. However, doing so, in my opinion, is fairly difficult, and you really should have some special tools, although there are ways around that too, but let's not go there. I decided to fix my '89 w/parts I already had (I was broke!), and spliced right into the wiring under the dash, in lieu of taking the whole steering column apart... and it's working great! I took a toggle switch & wired it to the accessories, basically everything that turns on when you move your key to the "On (run)" position. Then I wired a pushbutton to the starter relay. Now I have one less key to lose!! I still lock & unlock my doors like normal, so what's the difference. Plus, if your creative, you can hide the switch & button so nobody but you will know how to start your truck. I do need to caution you... you have to have a good understanding of your vehicle's electrical system or you'll make things worse. Another caution... the easiest, fastest way for me to do this resulted in bypassing the clutch safety switch (mine's a 5-speed manual), as well as the nice "dings" that sounded when I left my headlights on. The clutch wasn't a big deal, since I was used to pushing it in to start the truck anyway. But I've had my truck (& my heart!) "jump" a few times when starting. And after having to ask co-workers for jump starts about a dozen times or so after work, I'm now in the habit of checking my headlights everytime I shutoff my truck (day or night!). If you have the finances, and your truck is worth spending the money on, I suggest taking your truck to a dealer or mechanic & get it fixed correctly. But I sure had fun!!
