Internal pressure of the cooling system which is normally around 17 psi.
If the temp gauge reads normal and the engine is not overheating, this is normal. The system is designed to hold 15-17 psi of pressure (whatever the radiator cap is set for). This pressure will make the hoses feel hard.
Squeeze a radiator hose. If there is pressure, it will be hard to squeeze. However, some of them have a spring in them so they won't collapse, but you will be able to feel it if there is NO pressure. Use a rag to carefully and slowly open the radiator cap! To be safe, if its all hot, don't mess with it.
Assuming the engine is not overheating, it is normal for the hoses to get hard. The pressure in the cooling system should reach the maximum of whatever the radiator cap is set for, usually 15 to 17 lbs.

On the drivers side under the radiator there is a small black knob-like thing that you turn, and it will empty the radiator. Do not turn too hard, it will snap.
I really like to work under pressure cause of that I can discover my abilities and how I'm hard worker, but in other side you have to recognize which kind of pressure you have example: in my present work I have a lot of pressure with my customers and our showroom staff, so I can handle and manage with them, but if my manager put me under pressure to finish some job I'll keep the priority for the most important subjects that he ask about.
No most post '85 cars were manufactured with "sealed" cooling systems. It sounds like it is still under pressure.
super hard shifts
A bad catalytic converter can cause hard starts if it has become clogged. This produces excessive back pressure in the engine.
There are several possibilities that might cause hard starting. 1. Not enough fuel pressure. The fuel pressure should measure about 45 psi at the Schroeder valve on the fuel rail. If the pressure bleeds down then the fuel pump has to build up pressure before the fuel injectors will open. 2. A sticky or binding throttle position sensor might cause hard starting. 3. A faulty MAP sensor could possibly cause hard starting. 4. A stuck open egr valve can cause hard starting.
it is because they were under pressure :D
