The red wolf (Canis Rufus) existed from Pennsylvania southwards through the southeast to Texas. When the Europeans arrived, they killed of most of the major predators in the east, including the red wolf and the eastern cougar (Felis Concolor). In the 70's, in an effort to save this species, the last remaining purebred red wolves were captured on the Texas/ Louisiana border. As their numbers dwindled, red wolves that could not find a mate began to interbreed with the coyotes in the region. It quickly became apparent that most of the nearly 400 animals captured were coyote/red wolf hybrids. After dna testing was completed, only 14 pure red wolves existed in the U.S. These were taken to a captive breeding compound in Washington state. Several attempts to condition a few at a time into the wild were made, and finally a suitable refuge was found, in eastern North Carolina's Alligator River Wildlife Refuge. Today, the successful program boasts of nearly 115 wild red wolves there. Interbreeding with coyotes has been an ongoing problem, however, but measures have been taken to lessen the coyote impact, and has been somewhat successful, as more red wolves can now find mates, and are beginning to drive the coyote from the target area. Coyotes are not now, nor ever were, a part of the breeding success to replenish red wolves. That would only create what is known as a "hybrid swarm', animals neither coyote or red wolf.

The Red Wolf is one of the world's most endangered canids. Their numbers have dwindled through hunting and loss of habitat. Even the encroachment of coyotes in their habitat threatens the Red Wolf's existence as a unique species.

In 2013 and 2014, there was a rash of killings of Red Wolves. This is a Federal crime and the National Wildlife Federation had offered a reward for information leading to a conviction.

The red wolf became endangered because of hunting, mainly. Settlers wiped out most mammalian predators in the eastern forests.
