It could be a multitude of things ranging from needing a tune up or plug wires or it could be something as simple as the Throttle position sensor. Usually if it's a TPS it will idle rather high and uncontrollable. If it happens only under load I would suspect a broken plug or bad wire.

While driving my cavalier will shift into high gear for at least a couple of minutes. Shifting gears,giving it gas does not help. Any suggestions?
