On my 1995 Ford Explorer, just to the right of the headlight switch on the dash is a vertical switch that has the word dim below it. This switch dims the guage lighting, but if it is turned all the way up all the dome lights will stay on. Just move the switch down slightly and your dome lights will turn off if all your doors etc. are closed. if you find that in Normal Dim position, the Door Ajar always stays on and Dome refuses to dim or go OFF; LithGrease *may* free up a sticking Door LATCH switch; WD40 may do same, that is not always the case... On later models 1999 and onwards, the DOME is controlled by the ECM computer, which senses DOOR LATCH state! Its NOT the traditional DOOR JAM GROUND-MAKE system. Try to find my WiKi answer on the 1999 for more details; I am not certain on older 1996 models but I suspect that was the year Ford moved to Electronic Control. IF IT IS A manual DOOR JAM SWITCH and YOU CAN SEE IT, operate it manually or disconnect the circuit...
