What happens to your car when the alternator goes out?

It'll run solely off the battery for a little while until the battery becomes too depleted. The check engine light will most likely come on, as well. This is, of course, provided the alternator doesn't seize when it goes out. If it does seize, your vehicle will either stall out, or it'll cause the belt to snap, which, if you have a serpentine belt, will disable your AC compressor and power steering.

Is it safe to drive a car after it lost its Power steering feature due to faulty pump or fluid?

Generally not. It may seem safe, provided that you have the physical strength to control the steering without power assist, but there is another problem. With most power steering systems, the fluid also acts as a lubricant for the steering gear. If the fluid all leaks out, the gear can seize due to lack of lubrication. If the steering gear seizes, the steering will become suddenly locked in whatever position it is in at the time, likely causing a crash. On some systems, the fluid pushes a hydraulic cylinder attached to the steering linkage, and the steering gear has its own separate supply of lubricant. If you have such a system, the above may not be a concern.AnswerIt depends on the year, make and model. For instance I drove a 1993 Ford Ranger without power steering for 6 months with no problems. AnswerIf you still have decent handling of the car without power assist, then I don't see why not. But, if you get into an accident and you were knowingly driving the car without power steering (and how wouldn't you know :-P) you might have insurance issues. Not sure about that though. AnswerIf the power steering pump itself is leaking, you might have a problem. If the pump has no fluid in it to circulate, then it can heat up and seize. This can snap your serpentine belt.

How do you change the belt on a 94 Eldorado Northstar engine?

First remove the battery then you should be able to spot the belt tensioner. It will be the smaller pulley that is attached to the engine by an aluminum arm. There is a square hole cut in the aluminum arm that you can simply stick a 1/2 ratchet in. Then push the ratchet towards the car and this will release the pressure on the belt. Be careful not to let the tensioner snap back it could damage it or bust your knuckles. Proceed remove the old belt and follow the belt routing diagram that should be located on a panel under the hood somewhere. Route the belt around everything except for the power steering pump. Now push the tensioner again and pull the belt over the power steering pump and slowly let the tensioner back and your done. Added note - When you replace a belt always check the belt tensioner for proper pressure. This can be done using a torqure wrench set it to 110 ft/lbs for this vehicle. Failure to check the belt tensioner can result in excessive wear on the belt and premature breaking. A good rule of thumb is to replace the belt tensioner the same time you replace the belt. -amatureprofessional

Where is power steering position sensor in 2006 chev Malibu ls?

There is a DC motor on the end of your steering column under the dash. The position sensor is in the motor assy on the end of your steering column shaft. You have to remove your steering column, then take the assembly off of the column. You need to dissemble the assembly by removing a large snap ring, then the cylindrical cover comes off and the sensor is located right under the cover.

Will a water pump just freeze and snap belt on a 1999 town and country?

If the anti-freeze protection is not sufficient to prevent freezing , a seized water pump on any vehicle will break the driving belt. Some vehicles have more than 1 belt so if you lose a belt you may be able to limp to help with what remains operational. The pump can also lock up due to a failed bearing and snap the belt
