Could be any number of things, but most (95%) situations are a loose or broken vacuum hose. Try spraying starting fluid in "small" bursts around vacuum hoses, around the valve cover, and the intake. You can pick up a can for under 43.00 at ant parts store. If the engine RPMS climb higher, you found your leak. Be safe as starting fluid is flammable and if you have any random sparks, it might catch fire, most likely it wont, otherwise your would have busrt into flames already.
Could be the TPS, it will cause it to idle high and low and make the car become sluggish, but a vehicle will run without one, but it will run very rough.
Check the alternator.
It's usually a vacuum leak.
water has a high which causes it to heat very slowly ?
see previous answers, but if it idles high it might be the Mass Airflow Sensor. if your car idles too high for too long and you keep driving it, you could burn out the transmission module (very expensive )
possibly a vacuum leak or ur throttles out of adjustment
Check the Idle Air control valve. This lets air bypass the throttle body plate when the car is at idle or low revs.
Flooring the gas petal.
When I start up my 1988 cherokee laredo the idle is so high and loud it make me get very angry?
Perhaps a stuck throttle plate - try to free with a screw driver The throttle position sensor is also notorious for causing this as well. A vacuum leak can also cause high idle speed, but the vehicle will generally run rough as well.

Your car will idle high until the engine begins to warm. You could set the idle to be a bit lower, but that may cause the engine to stall out when it's cold out. The engine should begin to lower the RPMs when it is warmed up.
