in halo: combat evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3 master chief is the main protagonist and, except in halo 2 where you also play as the arbiter, is the only playable character throughout the campaign. However in Halo 3: ODST you do not play as master chief instead you play as "the rookie" an ODST trooper and you play as the rest of his team. Also in Halo Reach you do not play master chief, but you play another spartan. Halo Reach is a prequel to the series
