The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called Mormons) began in 1830 and had many 'focal point' cities throughout the 19th century. The first city that was a focal point for Mormon settlement was Kirtland, Ohio. Following this they moved to Independence, Missouri. After being kicked out of Missouri they fled to Nauvoo, Illinois. They were run out of Illinois and came to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah. Church members were encouraged to move to Salt Lake City from 1847 until about 1900 or so. Church members are now encouraged to stay where they are and build the church there, rather than gather in one specific city. Church headquarters is still located in Salt Lake City.
