Massachusetts had nearly double the national average of Irish immigrants, and today has a large population of the descendants of those immigrants. Many Irish immigrants moved to Boston in the 1840s-1860s in search of work because they were told the streets were paved with gold. The potato famine of the 1840s is a major cause for this as well. In addition to Massachusetts, many Irish immigrants settled in New York City and in Philadelphia.
Interestingly, New York State has the highest percentage of Gaelic speakers.

Boston
Yes, in a sense you were right, Boston is the most Irish big city in America. Yet to be precise Quincy, which is right south of Boston, this city of roughly 90,000 people, is, per capita, the most Irish city in America (yet most of its Irish-American citizens came directly from the Irish neighborhoods of Boston, like Southie and Dorchester, back between the late 1960's till the late 1980's, so in a sense they're still Bostonians at heart!).
For something like 34-38% of all Quincy's citizens are at least half Irish, and the city is run by these often politically entrenched Irish Americans who are in some ways this throw back to the 19th-early 20th century Irish ward bosses that once ran certain districts/areas of NYC, Chicago & Boston itself.
So although Quincy is like this extension of Boston, which, in a sense, it is, it's also this separate political entity/jurisdiction with its own political body, city hall, tax rate and proud status as this independent city that attracts Irish-Americans and Irish immigrants like this piece of metal does bits of iron (my Quincy neighborhood, which is called Squantum, is, per capita, the most Irish part of Quincy, and thus the nation, with roughly 70% of the population claiming at least some green genes!).
Though as far as big, major cities go, Boston is still #1, with close to 25% of its population being of either Irish descent or straight from the old sod (it also has more Irish pubs than even NYC!).
There are large populations of Irish descendants in many parts of the US, especially in the major cities. Boston, New York and Chicago have a great deal of people with Irish ancestry.
Irish people live all over America, in every single state.

The origional owner of the team, Walter Brown, wanted to increase attendance at the games. At the time Boston had a very large Irish population. In hopes that the Irish population would begin attending more, Brown named the basketball team the Celtics.
