There are different levels in the field of nursing. Nursing is a science and depending upon the level of nursing that one would like to pursue, the more sciences and classes one will need to take in order to advance one's degree. There are LPN's Licenced Practical Nurses (an 8 month course), Associate Degrees in Nursing which, when completed, will grant one an RN degree with limitations in management positions. Certain hospitals require a higher level which is an RN, BSN. This is a four to five year degree that is very intensive and allows one to assume higher professional roles. There are also Masters programs, an additional three to four years, which lead to nursing positions suited for upper managerial positions and research or advance practice clinical degrees such as a Nurse Practitioner. A Nurse Practitioner builds on previous nursing experience and then incorporates this knowledge with a medical model, this is a very intensive program and very selective. All positions in nursing are admirable. The work, dedication and caring involved is at times exhausting, but the rewards are far greater than one could ever dream of. If one is considering becoming a nurse, I would recommend that this person go online to visit websites of schools in their area. Sometimes there are programs that allow one to work from an RN, ADN, towards a Masters. It may make sense to get an ADN and then work as an RN while completing one's BSN or RN to Masters.
To become a nurse, you have a choice - choose from an AS, BS, or an MS in nursing. Of course, to do an MS, you need to first complete your BS. Other than these, some colleges also offer short courses where one can train to become a Licensed Practical Nurse or a Vocational Practice Nurse. An associate and a master's usually take up to 24 months, whereas a bachelor's can take up to 48 months. Apart from these, to qualify as a Registered Nurse, you need to appear for an exam offered by National Council of State Boards of Nursing, known as NCLEX-RN. Colleges all over the country offer nursing programs. But be sure to apply to an accredited college as hospitals and most other employers only hire candidates if they possess a degree from an accredited college.

You can research colleges and universities by name, or by programs of study, or by geographical location, size, or combinations of part or all of them. The site will provide you with a list of institutions based on your request. It will give you the schools background, accreditation, degree offerings, programs of study (majors), entrance requirements, tuition and fees, financial assistance, room and board, athletic programs, school activities, etc., and a link to each institutions official web page.
