The consequences of refusing to answer questions asked by the House Un-American Activities Committee given to the "Hollywood 10" included being cited with contempt of Congress and being given jail sentences. Because of the "Hollywood 10", Hollywood established a blacklist which was a collection of names of Hollywood personalities suspected of having communist ties. Those on the blacklist were unable to find work in the movies and lost their friends.Alger Hiss was accused by the HUAC of being a Soviet spy, convicted of perjury, and imprisoned. You could be blacklisted.
Local police investigated the burglary and the burglars. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, who were reporters for the Washington Post, dug into the story and published it. Archibald Cox was appointed special counsel to look into matter. Eventually the Senate set up a Watergate investigation committee .
Human Un-American Activities Committee: congressional committee that investigated possible subversive activities within the United States: to investigate possible subversives activities by Fascists, Nazis, or communists
In the 1950's, the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigated Communists who had supposedly infiltrated all aspects of American life, including the government, the military, and Hollywood. (The committee was formed in 1938 and dissolved in 1975, but it is most famous from the 1950's. Although Joseph McCarthy was in the U.S. Senate, not the House of Representatives, he worked in parallel with HUAC.)
The HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) used Hollywood Blacklist (the movie industry) to fight the supposed communists.
The Hollywood ten were ten Hollywood writers thought to be Communist by HUAC (House Committee on Un-American Activities). Joseph McCarthy said that these ten writers could use the film industry to spread communist propaganda. The Hollywood ten were then investigated by HUAC, the writers refused to give evidence saying that the constitution gave them the right to free speech. The Hollywood ten were supported by famous movie stars like Humphrey Bogart, this made no difference the Hollywood ten were sent to prison for refusing to give evidence at HUAC trials, and for being suspected communists. :)

One of the main policies was HUAC (House of Un-American Activities Committee) which investigated alleged communists. Another is the Loyalty Review Board, which investigated government officials accused of being communist spies or moles. Dennis vs. United States in Supreme Court set the standard to send alleged communists to prison for speaking out against the government. Then you have the traditional Containment Doctrine and Truman Doctrine.
