Benjamin Franklin made numerous contributions to improve life in his adopted hometown of Philadelphia. Among his most notable acts:
- Franklin created the Union Fire Company, the first volunteer fire company in the city and one of the first in North America
- He created the Academy and College of Philadelphia and served as its first president. The Academy later became The University of Pennsylvania (Penn)
- Ben Franklin created the first hospital in the 13 colonies, Pennsylvania Hospital. It still serves thousands of city residents each year.
In addition to launching these institutions, Benjamin Franklin served in various public positions in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, including the Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and Postmaster General of the United States. In this latter position, Franklin systemized and streamlined the mail delivery system of the new nation.
Franklin further improved the lives of the people of Philadelphia by serving as a senior statesman at the Second Continental Congress and the Constitional Convention, where he made important contributions to ensuring that the people of Philadelphia, and of the new United States, could live in freedom.
Finally, before his death, Franklin bequeathed 1,000 pounds to the city of Philadelphia to be invested for two hundred years, and then used for civic projects. When the trust matured in 1985, it was worth over $2,000,000. The city decided to use the funds to provide scholarships to local high school students.
