This sounds to me like one of the sensors could be giving you a problem. The areas I would look at are the throttle cable, and check the sensor connections one may be loose, with the choke light coming on that would point to the throttle cable or the idle. Check out the articles at Auto Tap they are pretty good on this area. There are several DIY aticles if you go back to the homepage, I put the link for the Check Engine Light below
The year, make, model and engine info would help, but I would start with replacing the fuel filter.

AnswerFuel Pump?Fuel Filter?Catalytic converter?Air filter? While all of the above will affect the engine speed performance, the sputtering or popping you are experiencing is caused by the oxygen sensor. It can cause this problem without causing a check engine light to come on.
The v6 engines have valves burn out constantly, which will cause both the damaged cylinder and the one across from it to misfire.
If there is a clicking noise get it to a mechanic you engine is blown and may be saved. Most likely you'll need a new one because a lifter is broken and it would be cheaper.
