The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system does this.

The symbol is for the cathalitic converter (petrol engines) or for the particulate filter (diesel engine), they have to be checked or replaced. Generally, this symbol means the depolution device, in any car.
It varies depending on engine type. A general rule would be 40k miles for petrol, and 80k for diesel.
