In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in the Islamic Republic of Iran they are required to wear the hijab by law. But there are still many countries in the Middle East which do so, not by law, but by cultural reasons. But there are also many countries in which the wearing of the hijab is optional and there is no forcing on wearing it.

P.S. I am a muslim. But personally I'm against every kind of force. And those muslim families who behave against their daughters wishes they are oppressors. Hijab is a requirement in Islam that women have to follow, but it is upon the woman herself to decide whether or not she should wear the hijab. Insha allah she fulfills this requirement. If the contrary happens, her decision should be respected. At the end of my reply, I would like to quote a verse from the Glorious Qur'an:

"There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taghoot and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower." Qur'an Surat Al-Baqara, Chapter No.2, Verse No.256, [2:256].

Hope this answer satisfies your requirements.

It is better not to force girls to wear hijab but try to make them understand the importance of it with care and love. But at times people force because they do not like their women to be out of grace. For hijab is the crown of the women.

What is the religious significance of the hijab?

Modesty is the major significance of the hijab. Many people think that Muslim women wear the hijab just a symbol to show that they are Muslims, but this is not the reason to wear the hijab.. wearin the hijab means we should guard ourself by being modes, not revealing much from our body and not seek so much attention. Hijab does not only mean cover the hair, but also to wear clothes that are not tight or transparent or that reveal other parts of the body except for hand and face.. it is seen that those who reveal inapproprite parts of the body is seeking attention in contrast to modesty. there are however many other ways to look at the hijab... some women believe by wearing the hijab they become more of an equal to males, as they are not dealt with based on their physical appearance and beauty, but rather for how they think and their actions. some wear hijab because they choose to and strongly believe in it's importance in Islam, while others are forced to wear it from their parents...

How do Muslims dress in Syria?

I will tell you, as a Syrian Christian female how my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters dress in my country. Muslim men here in Syria wear jeans and shirts just as in other country. As for females, a large percent of Muslim females in Syria do not wear Hijab, this has nothing to do with not being practicing Muslims. Almost all Muslims in Syria are practicing, males/females-Hijab wearing and none Hijab wearing/youth/elders. None Hijab wearing women wear jeans and tops just as they do in any other country. Hijab wearing women, wear the same clothes as the none Hijab wearing women but with shirts and T-shirts being long sleeved. They wear plenty of makeup, and many of the most attractive women I've met were Syrian women who wear the Hijab. Many Hijab wearing women in Syria wear tighter and much more alluring clothes than none Hijab wearing women do. As part of Arab culture, we (Christian or Muslim) as females do not wear shorts, belly showing tops, cleavage showing tops etc etc in public and prefer to be on the modest side of fashion. This has nothing to do with lack of freedom, womens rights or any other nonsense many Westerners think we, as Arab women put up with. This is part of our culture. Please come and visit, you will enjoy yourself very much and be extremely surprised by how inaccurately we (Muslims/Christians) of the Middle East are portrayed on Western news and TV. Have a great day and God bless both you and your family. *I would like to explain, in case you do not know, that the Hijab only covers hair*
