The word 'missionaries' goes back to the time the Spaniards built missions and felt they needed to 'civilize' the 1st people in Mexico,which at that time included much of what is now California. During this time they wiped out complete groups and cultures of 1st People. Do some research of native people that lived off the coast of Santa Barbara,California. But what stands out as one of the greatest crimes was almost the complete destruction of the Mayans and their advanced culture. One 'missionary' tortured and killed as many Mayans as he could find, books that he could burn and structures he could have demolished.
