There is a wide range of vegetable oils. They are derived from the seeds of many different plants eg. ground nut or peanut, soya, olive, colza, oil palm, linseed, walnut, hazel nut, coconut. In most cases the higher grade oils will bear the name of the plant from which they were obtained. Lower grade oils often intended for further processing such as margarine production are often referred to as vegetable oil without further description. Different parts of the world favour oils which are locally produced from plants which are easily cultivated in the local climate. Thus ground nut oil is favoured in West Africa, soya oil in N. America, colza oil in N. Europe and olive oil in the Mediterranean area.

Possibly the least eco friendly is that derived from oil palm. The extensive cultivation of this oil particularly in Indonesia is very destructive of endangered species notably the orang outan one of the world's most endearing primates.

Well, Cooking Oil comes from crops which are usually found in farms. So the way to figure this out is to find where there will be many farms. But a pretty obvious one is Australia. They produce lots of bottles of cooking oil every day.

Hope this helps you.
