Britain is the name of the islands off the West coast of Europe. They were called Britannia by the Romans, based upon their attempt to pronounce the ancient Celtic name for the place. The largest island is Great Britain and this forms most of the Countries of England, Scotland and Wales. The second largest island, geographically but certainly not politically, is Ireland, most of which is the Republic of Ireland - where very few of the inhabitants regard themselves as British.

The English are made up of the various Germanic and Scandinavian tribes who invaded around 1,500 years ago, pushing the Celtic Britons Westwards and Northwards. The large part of Great Britain where they settled became known as England.

The present political state is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and its inhabitants are called British. People living in the constituent countries of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own words to describe themselves but the distinction is blurred. Of all the people born in Scotland, or who have a parent or grandparent born there, more live in London than in Scotland. Of all the people now living in England, 75% were born, or have a parent of grandparent who was born, outside of the United Kingdom.
