The Cuban Missile Crisis. The USA found out the Soviets were building missiles that could carry nuclear warheads on Cuba. Missiles which had the range to reach the USA. The USA had a naval blockade around Cuba to keep Soviet ships from reaching Cuba. A USA U-2 recon. spy plane was shot down over Cuba and the American pilot killed. The Soviet ships went back to Russia. The Soviet dismantled their missile launch sites, and the USA dismantled it's missile sites in Turkey, which could hit Russia, if launched.

During the Kennedy administration, spy planes overflew Cuba and the Russian ICBM sites were discovered. That indicated that most of the US was vulnerable to nuclear attack. The US President initiated a naval blockade of Cuba that seemed to enrage the political leader(s) of the USSR. Both countries felt that they had the absolute right to do what they had done. The Russian President Kruschev needed a way to withdraw the missiles, without appearing to bow to the US. Eventually, through some give and take by both superpowers and some clandestine agreements, the missiles were withdrawn from Cuba.

As far as I know, this is the first and only time the Armed Forces of the US were placed on condition Def-con 2. Condition Def-con 1 is when we are actively engaged in war.

In 1962 world war two had just ended and the U.S. was not on good terms with the Soviets because of their government and this sparked the cold war. This luckily did not escalate into another war, (this would be nuclear and very bad) but it caused a lot of tension in both Russia and the U.S. Hope I helped :D

In October 1962 the Soviet Union tried to place Russian ICBM's in Cuba at the invitation of Fidel Castro. When US spyplanes saw and photographed the missiles on the decks of freighters this led to a tense 2 week confrontation as the US Navy and Air Force blockaded Cuba to stop the incoming ships. The blockade was formally ended on November 20, 1962, and this ended the confrontation.

What incident is most closely related to the installation of the ''hot line'' between the Soviet Union and the US?

After the Cuban missle crisis in October 1962 both the US and Russia realized how close we had come to a nuclear exchange. They established a "Hot Line" between the two countries to avoid any doubts in the event of an accidental launch in the future.
