In 1933 Ruth Graves Wakefield of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, made a batch of cookies to which she added broken chips of a semisweet Nestle chocolate bar. They were such a huge success that she struck a deal with the candy company to print her recipe on the chocolate wrappers in exchange for a lifetime supply of the bars. Originally sold with a small tool for chipping the bars into small morsels, Nestle unveiled the first chopped chocolate pieces in 1939, known today as Chocolate Chips. Nestle's cookie Toll House cookie brand wass named after the Whitman inn.

Ruth Wakefield invented (Toll House) Chocolate Chip Cookies in the 1920's. She and her husband opened the Toll House Inn, located in Massachusetts, where she served cookies to her guests. When she didn't have baker's chocolate she substituted broken pieces of a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar. The recipe became popular and she made a deal with Nestlé to print the Toll House cookie recipe on the Nestlé packaging. Thus, the chocolate chip cookie was born.

By accident. The lady who invented them was trying to take a shortcut. She put chunks of chocolate into the cookie dough. She thought it would melt and spread out to make a chocolate cookie. She was trying to skip the step of melting the chocolate and then blending it into the cookie dough. Her original recipe is still available on the back of Nestle chocolate chip bags. It is the original Tollhouse Cookie Recipe.

Like many great discoveries...and this is one of the greatest, It was a mistake.

Ruth Wakefield invented chocolate chip cookies in 1930 at the Toll House inn she and her husband Keneth ran near Whitman, Massachusetts. Like a bed and breakfast she made food for her guests. One evening in 1937 she got the idea to make a chocolate butter cookie so she broke up one of the bars of semi-sweet chocolate that Andrew Nestle gave her. She thought that it would mix together with the dough & make all chocolate cookies . Needless to say, it didn't. However the cookies came out decent so she served them. They of course were so good they had to be done again. She published the recipes in several newspapers and the recipe became very popular and the rest as they say, is history!
