The U.S. Army/Marines allow people with felony charges into the service; however, these cannot exceed past a minor offense, a serious offense (murder, rape, etc…) are disqualifiers for the waiver. I don't believe the Coast Guard allows this though, sorry.
Separation in the military (used to be) SOP (Standard Operating Procedures). The US military is not "as military" as it used to be; it's nearly half law enforcement and half military...so the Coast Guard and NG might bend alittle (with many new programs and loop holes available).
Generally there is a bonus for enlistment. I have no idea if there is right now if there is. The best place to look or to ask questions is a Coast Guard Recruiter. Unlike the other armed services if you are apprehensive of joining a CG Recruiter will "NOT" hassle you. It is the only service that the recruiters wait for you to make the decision instead of calling every day and stopping by your work or home to pressure you to join. So, there is no pressure in calling and asking. The Coast Guard "ONLY" wants people that are really interested!
Initially you join the coast guard and are shipped to Cape May NJ for boot camp. If you are looking to be an officer it is in New London CT. From there you fill out a dream sheet of where you would "like" to go and the person who writes your orders to new duty stations (detailer) will look at that and see if there is any openings, if not then you will be sent to wherever the CG deems neccissary. We have units in the middle east and some of our ships travel all over the world. We have units all along our coasts east, west, gulf of Mexico, Mississippi river, great lakes, and Alaska to name a few. If you are looking for the most ablitiy to stay in one area I recommend BM (boatswains mate) or MK (Machinery Technician) our 2 largest ratings that have billets at just about every unit in the coast guard.
yes, they are called flippers when you join the coast guard

No, signing up for the Coast Guard, both Active duty and reserves is just like anyother military service, and "they" pay you. If you're interested in a non commital Coast Guard type job, there's always the Coast Guard Auxilary. Try going to their site at cgaux (dot) org.
