Why was Catherine of aragon's marriage to Arthur not consummated?

This can never be proved with certainty. Catherine claimed that her marriage to Prince Arthur had not been consummated. Papal permission was obtained to allow Arthur's brother Henry (Henry VIII) to marry his brother's widow. It was not until many years later (and no male children) that Henry began to claim that his conscience bothered him... that he had broken the laws of the Church by taking his brothers' wife as his own. Catherine maintained that she was a virgin at the time she married Henry until her death.

What happened to king Henry viii brother Arthur?

Arthur, Prince of Wales, was Henry's older brother and heir to the throne of Henry VII, their father. He was born on the 19/20 September 1486. On the 14th November 1501, he married Katherine of Aragon. He was 14 and Katherine was almost 16. In March 1502 Arthur fell ill with (probably) tuberculosis and he died on 2 April. Eventually Henry married the widow, Katherine in 1509, after the death of Henry VII, as it was said her marriage to Arthur had not been consummated. They had one living child, Mary (later Mary I). However, when Henry subsequently decided to divorce Katherine, he brought into question the non-consummation of Katherine's marriage to Arthur, in order to give him ammunition for an annullment.

The Queen of England married her brother-in-law?

Katherine of Aragon - daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain - married Arthur, son of King Henry VII in 1501. Arthur died in Wales in 1502 at the age of sixteen and just over a year later Katherine was betrothed to Arthur's brother, later King Henry VIII, in 1509, allegedly to avoid King Henry VII's obligation to return her dowry to her father. The future King Henry VIII was too young to marry and so the wedding was delayed until 1509. In the intervening years, Katherine was kept more or less a prisoner at London's Durham House until after Henry VII died and Henry VIII took the throne, whereupon a double coronation was held.

Who was Henry VIII eldest brother?

Henry VIII had one older brother name Arthur, who died while their father, Henry VII, was still alive. Arthur married Catherine of Aragon, who later married Henry VIII, after Arthur's death. Catherine and Henry were the parents of Queen Mary Tudor, also known as Bloody Mary because of her persecution of non-Catholics. Henry's brother was killed so he married his widowed wife. She did not produce a son so he asked the Pope for a divorce. The Pope said no and so Henry made his own religion with no taxes.

How old was lady Catherine when prince Arthur died?

Prince Arthur, the elder son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, and heir to the throne, was born on 20 September 1486 and died on 2 April 1502, making him nearly 16. His death made his younger brother Henry heir to the throne (Henry VIII). Arthur had been married to Katherine of Aragon, and eventually Henry VIII married Katherine, as it was believed that Katherine's marriage to Arthur had never been consummated. This fact would be turned around in later years, when Henry wanted to divorce Katherine, and needed to find a reason to do so.

How many years did catherine of aragon marry Henry?

From a Who2 biography Catherine of Aragon was the first of the six wives of King Henry VIII of England. As a child she was betrothed to Henry's older brother, Prince Arthur; they were married in 1501 but Arthur died six months later. Catherine subsequently married Henry on 11 June 1509. She was pregnant by him at least six times but only one of the children, Mary, survived. Desiring a male heir, Henry divorced Catherine on 30 March 1534 and married Anne Boleyn. The act of divorce proved highly significant: it caused Henry to break with the pope and thereby led to the English Reformation. After the divorce Catherine was not executed (as were some of Henry's later wives) but was expelled from court and died two years later at Kimbolton Castle. Her only surviving child became Mary Tudor, also known as Bloody Mary, who reigned from 1553-1558.
