Mary Tudor attempted to return the Church of England to what it was in the early years of her father Henry VIII. She desired to restore the Religious Houses, but there was little support from the Catholic Nobility and gentry, who were reluctant to restore the land and wealth they had filched, so she asked the pope to accept the situation as it was.

She tried to make the Pope the religious authority in England, but fell out with him and brought back the system before Henry which on paper at least was hostile to the pope as a foreign monarch.

She abolished the headship of the crown, but used it in her quarrel with the bishop of Rome!

She also brought back the Anglican Sarum Rite, which had been in use from 1090 till 1549.
