What did gandhis salt march symbolize?

Gandhi encouraged others to go on the salt march so that they could get the salt which they needed so badly but were being forced to pay for. The people in India needed salt more badly than other, colder, countries (britain for instance) because it is much hotter there so they would sweat more. Aswell as taking the salt from the soldiers, they went to the sea to get salt which was then taken from them.

Mahatma Gandhi found in salt a powerful symbol that could unite the nation. To unite the people, Gandhiji sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin stating eleven demands. The most stirring of all was the demand to abolish the salt tax. Salt was something consumed by the rich and poor alike, and it was one of the most essential items of food. Mahatma Gandhi declared that the tax on the salt and the government monopoly over its production was the most oppressive phase of the British rule.

However, this demand was not fulfilled by Lord Irwin , so Gandhiji started his historic Salt March known as Dandi March , accompanied by 78 of his trusted followers. The march was over 240 miles from Gandhiji's Sabarmati Ashram to Gujarat coastal town Dandi. The march started on 13 March and reached on 6 April. Here, Gandhiji violated the laws by manufacturing salt by boiling sea water. This marked the beginning of Civil Disobedience Movement.
